Oh, SmAlbany!

Daily posts and occasional longer essays about politics, culture, and life in the Capital Region...updated M-F, midmorning

"I write this not as a booster of Albany, which I am, nor an apologist for the city, which I sometimes am, but rather as a person whose imagination has become fused with a single place, and in that place finds all the elements that a man ever needs..." -W. Kennedy, from O Albany!

West side stadium

No upstater with any common sense can be in favor of the west side stadium plan for the jets. For once, the TU editorial board shows a little bit itself:
There's a reason why New Yorkers, upstaters and downstaters alike, oppose subsidizing a new football stadium for the New York Jets on the West Side of Manhattan to the tune of $600 million. It would be a terrible waste of rather scarce public money that would better be spent on other purposes.
Preach it. It's incredibly stupid to build a football stadium on the most valuable undeveloped land in Manhattan. It's even dumber to ask the residents of NYC to pay for it. It's dumber yet to ask residents upstate to pay for it. Canestrari got right on the wagon yesterday as well:
"This is a project that the local community does not want, the local city does not want, the voting population of the state does not want and would waste hundreds of millions of state funding.

I know that Bruno feels the same way, and Silver is mad because he'd rather redevelop the WTC, which is conviently in his district in downtown Manhattan.

Even the tax-crazy state politicians and newspapers can't ask for $600 million for 8 football games a year with a straight face. What are Bloomberg and Pataki thinking?
