Oh, SmAlbany!

Daily posts and occasional longer essays about politics, culture, and life in the Capital Region...updated M-F, midmorning

"I write this not as a booster of Albany, which I am, nor an apologist for the city, which I sometimes am, but rather as a person whose imagination has become fused with a single place, and in that place finds all the elements that a man ever needs..." -W. Kennedy, from O Albany!

Worst Siena team ever?

Worst Siena team ever?: Man, do I feel bad for Fran McCaffery, the new head basketball coach at Siena. After Rob Lanier was fired at then end of last season, Siena's leading scorer and others left the team, then a handful of recruits decided to pull out their letters of intent, and then last week the team's best big man, Michael Haddix, suffered a season-ending injury while on a MAAC all-star tour in China.

By my count, Siena only has six returning scholarship players, and something like 5 or 6 scholarship slots on the team going unused. I hope the press is kind this year; McCaffery's going to need some time to rebuild the program. Attendance at the arena is going to be dismal. It was a ghost town last year, and at that point they had some hope.

12 wins this year would be a huge positive, in my mind.

There was no reason to fire Lanier, his kids played hard and there were no scandals over off court activity. The school simply over-reacted to the rise of U Albany and this year they will pay the price. Three wins, maximum.
