Oh, SmAlbany!

Daily posts and occasional longer essays about politics, culture, and life in the Capital Region...updated M-F, midmorning

"I write this not as a booster of Albany, which I am, nor an apologist for the city, which I sometimes am, but rather as a person whose imagination has become fused with a single place, and in that place finds all the elements that a man ever needs..." -W. Kennedy, from O Albany!

Free Wi-Fi locations

Free Wi-Fi locations: Without a doubt, the best service a coffeeshop, bookstore, or library can offer these days is free wireless internet. In the greater capital region, this is slowly becoming a thing of yesterday at the major chains: Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Starbucks have all gone T-mobile, requiring an expensive account for access (however, it is often the case that one can get free Wi-Fi at the Newton Plaza Starbucks by jumping on a hotspot from the office next door.)

However, two very local options have added free wi-fi recently. One is Panera Bread ( various locations: Latham Farms, Balltown Road, Washington Ave., Clifton park), although they have put so many restrictions on the sites you can visit, it often is more frustrating than fruitful to hop on the web there.

The best spot, by far, is Uncommon Grounds on western avenue near SUNY. It has absolutley free wi-fi, with absolutely no restrictions. I am composing this there right now.

Any other good locations? Please leave a comment.
